In Conversation with Esther Perel

One of today's most insightful voices on modern love discusses human connection in times of uncertainty

When: June 2020
Where: Your loungeroom (virtual event)

“Perel’s ideas are … instantly familiar because they resonate deeply. It’s all rather terrifying in its intuitiveness and its pure rightness.”

The Observer (UK)

The Talent

This event brings together two thought leaders for a considered, topical conversation on human connection in times of uncertainty.

Esther and Hugh each have remarkable experience and insight relating to perspective on life, power of the will, search for meaning, and the resilience of the human spirit.

Esther Perel

Psychotherapist and New York Times bestselling author, Esther Perel, is recognised as one of today’s most insightful and original voices on modern relationships. Fluent in nine languages, she helms a therapy practice in New York City and serves as an organisational consultant for Fortune 500 companies around the world. Her celebrated TED Talks have garnered nearly 30 million views and her international bestseller Mating in Captivity: Unlocking Erotic Intelligence is a global phenomenon that has been translated into nearly 30 languages. Her newest book is the New York Times bestseller The State of Affairs: Rethinking Infidelity. Esther is also an executive producer and host of the award-winning podcast Where Should We Begin? And her new podcast How’s Work?

Esther was quick to tackle the challenges of self-isolation that resulted from the COVID-19 pandemic with Where Should We Begin?: Couples Under Lockdown. In the new podcast series, she offers couples therapy to those who are self-isolating together and discusses why some people might come out of this wanting to get married, while others will come out wanting a divorce or breakup — “disasters generally operate as an accelerator in a relationship”.

Hugh Van Cuylenburg

During a year spent in the far north of India volunteering and living at an underprivileged school in the Himalayas, Hugh discovered resilience in its purest form. There was no running water, no electricity and no beds; everyone slept on the floor of their desert hut. Even though these people had very little, he was blown away by how happy they were.

Inspired by this experience, Hugh returned to Melbourne and commenced working on his own program for schools. ‘The Resilience Project’ was born.

The Resilience Project has delivered programs to over 500 schools around the country and worked with many elite sporting teams including the Australian cricket, netball and soccer teams, and NRL and AFL clubs.
